If
you travel up or down the A6, it is probable that you will have noted the
imposing façade of The Manor House in Slyne-with-Hest. It is difficult to shy
away from The Manor’s exposed stonework, consisting of grey squared boulders
and cobbles. If you look more closely, you will see a panel above the front
door of the house with the inscription, ‘CGM 1681’. This includes the likely
date of the house’s construction and the initials refer to its original owners:
Cornelius and Mary Greene.
However,
something you might not realise from the The Manor’s commanding exterior, is
that there lies a small tea room to the rear of the main house. The Manor’s
outbuildings have been sympathetically restored, creating an inviting space for
the public to enjoy.
The welcoming environment of the tea room
hits you as soon as you enter the old, characteristic building. Throughout the winter, the
focal point of the tea room is an Esse woodburning stove framed by a plain
sandstone surround. The mullioned
windows, probably dating back to the late seventeenth century, provide a further source of light. The floor,
composed of York stone flags, is another original feature of this historical
building.
Although
the ostensible purpose of the building is uncertain, it is likely that it was
used as a wash house for the Lord and Lady of the Manor. This function changed
with the passage of time. In accordance with the Ordnance Survey Maps of 1889
and 1910, the kitchen area of the tea room was occupied by three pigsties –
possibly foreshadowing the mouth-watering aroma of sizzling bacon during the
tea room’s opening hours.
As
time progressed, The Manor House became a dairy farm owned by the Hoggarth
family and the area was used for milk processing in the late twentieth century.
Serendipitously, the commercial milk refrigerator at the Hoggarth’s farm is now
where many a milk-based Atkinsons coffee is crafted.
Directly
outside of the tea room, is a quaint courtyard. The tea room’s pentice roof
covers two sides of the cobbled courtyard, providing a sheltered area for dog
walkers to sit and contemplate the distinctive architecture of The Manor House.
In the summer months, the courtyard is adorned with brightly coloured flowers
and herbs.
If
you are interested in the history of The Manor House in Slyne-with-Hest, it
might be a good idea to follow the footsteps of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745
and enjoy some refreshment here. Hopefully though, in contrast to The Young
Pretender, you will not be on your way to a debacle in Derbyshire.
